Benefits of Whole Grains

We love to use whole grains here at The Table Catering. Chef Peter makes our breads and baked goods from scratch with organic whole wheat flour from Capay Mills. He also features brown rice from Massa Organics. Whole grains give a depth of flavor to the dishes they are in. They are also great for our bodies. Here’s more on the health benefits of whole grains from our partner dietitian Amy Slabaugh, RDN:

Looking to nourish your body? Take a closer look at your grain products.

For the most part, all food fills us up and gives us some kind of energy. However, when you’re looking to truly nourish your body you’ll want to look more closely at what you’re getting.  When it comes to grain based foods (cereals, breads, crackers, pasta, etc.) they are not all made equally. Grain based foods made with refined flour provide you with the starchy carbohydrate and some protein that the grain has to offer, but they are missing out on many of the vitamins, minerals, healthy fats and fiber that grains can provide when they’re left in their whole, unrefined, form. Vitamins and minerals are vital to many functions in our body - so vital that makers of refined flours are required to add them back in! But, fiber (which is not added back in) is sorely missed from all refined grain flours.

What can fiber do for you?

Fiber helps to keep us feeling full, which can make a snack or meal more satisfying. It also helps to promote a healthy digestive tract and keeps things running smoothly as your body eliminates waste. Fiber can also help to keep your cholesterol levels down, and regulate blood sugar levels. With this variety of benefits, fiber is something you’ll want to be sure you’re including enough of in your diet.
